Good Food at Bukit Tinggi (near Genting Highland McDonald's)

Many of us have probably heard from our friends talking about this seafood restaurant located at Bukit Tinggi near McDonald's at Gentling Highland foothill.

Their specialties include steamed fresh seafood in double decker pot with lower pot containing soup to be used for boiling with "Yin Choy" vegetables, and chili-cutlets fried with green chillies especially good strangely (yes, chillies with chillies - tastes good)!

.

They also serve excellent tau-fu fried-eggs, roasted Kampong-chicken, grilled mackerel, and lamb-chops to name a few.

Great foods but they are getting a bit pricey. One pot of the steamed seafood ranges from Rm90.00 to Rm120.00 for a serving, and another addditonal charge of Rm12.00 for the vegetables for the soup (August, 2009 pricing)

Their shop is quite hidden from the main road at Kampong Bukit Tinggi but easily located as they are directly behind the BHP Petrol Station which is visible from the main road. If you are coming from Kuantan, it is on the left about 500 meters before McDonald's at Genting Highland foothill.

Powerful Voice

Enjoy the following MTV from Whitney.... Great voice!
(Please pause the music player of this blog before viewing!)

Fishballs

There is a famous fish-ball noodles stall Restaurant Khuang Li located at Taman Connaught, Cheras. They sell great fish-balls and fantastic quality yong-tau-fu. It opens daily and great for breakfast and lunch for family at slightly higher prices.

Good FOOD

Will start a chain on good food articles to keep this blog going. Please share with us if you have come across any shops selling good food in Malaysia. Please provide a brief write up include address, photos, rating if possible.

Here is the very first one. Most of us should know about this "Lam Mee" shop at Pudu Wet Market. This one is along Jalan Low Yew underneath Jalan Tun Razak flyover next to the wet market within the vicinity of Wenworth Hotel. It has been there for many years.

Kedai Makanan Mayking
No. 38, Jalan Yew, Off Jalan Pudu,
Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan 55100
03-9222-3740
Phone: +603-9222-3740

Their specialities are Lam Mee (yellow noodles in thick sauce), pork meat balls and Foo-chuk rolls.

Reasonable prices with quality food. The only reservation is car parking (what's new in KL?) but as the saying goes, if there is a will, there is a way. Enjoy.

Useful Tips on Prevention of Hypertension (or High Blood Pressure)

This is an extract from Wikipedia on Hypertension which you might find it useful
(Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypertension).

Prevention

The degree to which hypertension can be prevented depends on a number of features including: current blood pressure level, changes in end/target organs (retina, kidney, heart - among others), risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and the age at presentation. Unless the presenting patient has very severe hypertension, there should be a relatively prolonged assessment period within which should be repeated measurements of blood pressure. Following this, lifestyle advice and non-pharmacological options should be offered to the patient, before any initiation of drug therapy.
The process of managing hypertension according the guidelines of the British Hypertension Society suggest that non-pharmacological options should be explored in all patients who are hypertensive or pre-hypertensive. These measures include;
  • Weight reduction and regular aerobic exercise (e.g., walking) are recommended as the first steps in treating mild to moderate hypertension. Regular exercise improves blood flow and helps to reduce resting heart rate and blood pressure. Several studies indicate that low intensity exercise may be more effective in lowering blood pressure than higher intensity exercise. These steps are highly effective in reducing blood pressure, although drug therapy is still necessary for many patients with moderate or severe hypertension to bring their blood pressure down to a safe level.
  • Reducing dietary sugar intake.
  • Reducing sodium (salt) in the diet may be effective: It decreases blood pressure in about 33% of people (see above). Many people use a salt substitute to reduce their salt intake.
  • Additional dietary changes beneficial to reducing blood pressure includes the DASH dietdietary approaches to stop hypertension), which is rich in fruits and vegetables and low-fat or fat-free dairy foods. This diet has been shown to be effective based on research sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. In addition, an increase in daily calcium intake has the benefit of increasing dietary potassium, which theoretically can offset the effect of sodium and act on the kidney to decrease blood pressure. This has also been shown to be highly effective in reducing blood pressure. (
  • Discontinuing tobacco use and alcohol consumption has been shown to lower blood pressure. The exact mechanisms are not fully understood, but blood pressure (especially systolic) always transiently increases following alcohol or nicotine consumption. Besides, abstention from cigarette smoking is important for people with hypertension because it reduces the risk of many dangerous outcomes of hypertension, such as stroke and heart attack. Note that coffee drinking (caffeine ingestion) also increases blood pressure transiently but does not produce chronic hypertension.
  • Reducing stress, for example with relaxation therapy, such as meditation and other mindbody relaxation techniques, by reducing environmental stress such as high sound levels and over-illumination can be an additional method of ameliorating hypertension. Jacobson's Progressive Muscle Relaxation and biofeedback are also used, particularly, device-guided paced breathing,] although meta-analysis suggests it is not effective unless combined with other relaxation techniques.

Life Cycles

The article below was written by Patrick Teoh in his blog "Niamah!!".

To All those Born in the 50's, 60's & early '70s ...

First, we survived with mothers who had no maids. They cooked /cleaned while taking care of us at the same time.

They took aspirin, candies floss, fizzy drinks, shaved ice with syrups and diabetes were rare. Salt added to Pepsi or Coke was remedy for fever.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets.

As children, we would ride with our parents on bicycles/ motorcycles for 2 or 3. Richer ones in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a private taxi was a special treat.

We drank water from the tap and NOT from a bottle.

We would spend hours on the fields under bright sunlight flying our kites, without worrying about the UV ray which never seem to affect us.

We go to jungle to catch spiders without worries of Aedes mosquitoes.

With mere 5 pebbles (stones) would be a endless game. With a ball (tennis ball best) we boys would ran like crazy for hours.

We catch guppy in drains / canals and when it rain we swim there.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually worry about being unhygenic.

We ate salty, very sweet & oily food, candies, bread and real butter and drank very sweet soft drinks, sweet coffee/ tea, ice kacang, but we weren't overweight because..... .
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, till streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. AND WE DON'T HAVE HAND PHONES TO BUG US. And we were O.K. AND WE ARE SAFE.

We would spend hours repairing our old bicycles and wooden scooters out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem .

We did no t have Playstations, X-boxes, Nintendo's, multiple channels on cable TV, DVD movies, no surround sound, no phones, no personal computers, no Internet. WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and we still continued the stunts.
We never had birthdays parties till we are 21

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and just yelled for them!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

Yet this generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 40 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!

CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the government regulated our lives for our own good.

And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.
